I found Morven hunched over a table strewn with scrolls and open books. His black-clad frame was still thin, though more filled out than when he’d been in the wheelchair. Pale white skin contrasted with dark eyes and hair.

When his hooded gaze met mine, I reminded myself to breathe.

He’s human.

Still, the intensity in his eyes spoke of more. More intelligence, more intuition, more seductive than I cared to admit. Although I’d gotten to know him, there was still an air of mystery that intrigued me.

“Sabine?” His deep, velvety voice made a shiver dance down my spine.

“He-ey.” I attempted casualness, but my voice cracked, and I cleared my throat. “Um, hey.”

He arched an eyebrow. “You okay?”

“Fine.” I sat in the chair beside the desk. The laptop’s metal case rattled as I placed it on the tabletop.

“What’s that?” he asked.

“It belongs to miners illegally stealing cerecite.” I motioned to the laptop. “I may have… borrowed it… from them.”

He lifted an eyebrow, a bemused grin tugging at his full lips. “Borrowed it, huh?”

“Yeah.” I scratched my cheek. “I’m hoping to find out who they are and how to stop them.”

“Is it encrypted?”

“I don’t know yet.”

I pried the lid open—heavier than it looked, to reveal a blank blue screen. The boxy construction seemed to be made of solid iron, not a plastic device like the ones back home. “Odd computer. I’ve never seen one like this.”

“Maybe it’s especially for mining operations?”

“Maybe.”
